Spurlin - Howard
Dr. and Mrs. Richard J. Spurlin of Opp announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Melanie Ann, to Frederick Reed Howard the son of Patricia Bell Howard of Vestavia Hills and Frederick Harry Howard of Troy.
Miss Spurlin is the granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ollie J. Spurlin of Opp and the late Mr. and Mrs. Sam Houston Merrill of Dozier.
She is a graduate of Opp High School and a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Alabama where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. While attending the University of Alabama Miss Spurlin was a member of Phi Beta Kappa honor society, Mortar Board honor society and Alpha Delta Pi sorority. Miss Spurlin is also a graduate of the University of Montevallo where she earned a Master of Education degree in Community and Agency Counseling.
Mr. Howard is the grandson of Mrs. John Edward Bell Sr. and the late Mr. Bell of Trussville. He is also the grandson of Geraldine Phillips Howard Flowers of Troy and the late Harry Haig Howard of Troy.
Mr. Howard is a graduate of Vestavia High School.
He attended Troy State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice.
While attending Troy State, Mr. Howard served s manager for the TSU Trojan football program for four years.
Miss Spurlin is employed as a licensed professional counselor with Pathways Professional Counseling, a family ministry of Alabama Baptist Children's Homes, in Birmingham.
Mr. Howard is employed with United Parcel Service in Birmingham and Village Press in Mountain Brook.
The wedding is planned for March 6, 2004, at First Baptist Church in Opp.
