[Obituary of Oweta Johnston: "
Oweta Johnston (1918-2013) - Oweta Johnston went home to be with the Lord on June 8, 2013, after enjoying a long and happy 94 years of life. Oweta was born on October 18, 1918, in Crystal Springs, Arkansas to John Brumely & Rebecca Moore Brumley. She was one of 11 children. The family moved to Oklahoma when Oweta was very young and that is where she was raised. Her mother showed her kids what it was like to work hard and to preserve. Oweta went on to School in Butner, OK, where she met Louis Johnston who she married on April 4, 1936. They were married for 65 years. They seem like world travelers as they lived in Oklahoma, then Yuma, AZ, then San Fernando, CA, back to Oklahoma, then Gilbert, Arizona, then Somerton and finally settling back in Yuma. During all this moving they had time to have a wonderful family. Oweta had four children, Vernon, Philip, Peggy, and Polly. Oweta was definitely a hard worker. She worked at the Yuma General Hospital as a candy striper, she worked in the fields picking cotton but her primary occupation was a homemaker. She dedicated her life to taking care of her family by showing and teaching them the value of hard work. You could always catch her in the yard working in her garden or at her sewing machine or with a needle in her hand working on her quilts, or perhaps in the kitchen making a wonderful meal. No matter what, her family always came first. Oweta was the caregiver to her late husband until his passing in 2000 and then she decided to move onto an assisted care facility to be around others her age where she enjoyed her remaining years until her passing. Oweta was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Louis; daughter, Peggy; grandson, Dale Heck; great-grandson, Colon Compton. She is survived by her brother, Herman (Nita) Brumley; children, Vernon (Jimee) Johnston, Philip (Joyce) Johnston, and Polly Guinn as well as 5 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Oweta always had a smile on her face, and a laugh in her heart and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Visitation will be held on June 13, 2013, from 6:00pm to 9:00pm and a Funeral Service will be held at Johnson Mortuary Chapel June 14, 2013, at 10:00am. Interment will be at Desert Lawn Memorial Park, in Yuma, AZ."]
