[Obituary of Walter Sanders: "MAY 22, 1917 - MAY 10, 2008 Dr. Walter Edward Sanders Sr., 90, of Raleigh, N.C., died Saturday, May 10, 2008. He was born in Newberry, S.C. on May 22, 1917, to A.V. and Lottie Mae Sanders. He was a pastor, teacher, counselor, husband, father and friend. His career touched the lives of countless friends, families and many students. He was loved for his compassion for all people. He wanted each person to reach their full and true potential in life. He was known for his smile and contagious laugh. He was a very happy person in all walks of his life. He served in numerous leadership roles. He was chaplain and director of pastoral care for Dorothea Dix Hospital in Raleigh. He taught classes in pastoral care to students from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and also students for two other divinity schools for many years. He was chaplain at the Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C., trustee of Truett McConnell College in Georgia, and also trustee of Wingate University in Wingate, N.C. He established several new churches, Eastside Baptist Church in Marietta, Ga., Aversboro Road Baptist Church in Garner, N.C., and a church in Asheboro, N.C. He was pastor adviser for the State Brotherhood Organization in North Carolina and served on the General Board and Education Commission of the North Carolina Baptist State Convention. Dr. Sanders also was chaplain for the Civitan Club of Georgia. Dr. Sanders was ordained a Baptist minister on Sept. 7, 1940. He was pastor of churches in South Carolina, Kentucky, Georgia and North Carolina. While in Kentucky, he married Opal Williams on Aug. 28, 1944. She often said that she married her pastor. Dr. Sanders was a 1941 graduate of Newberry College. He earned his master's and doctorate degrees from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville and graduate school of pastoral care at the North Carolina Baptist Hospital Internship and Residency. He was preceded in death his parents; three sisters, Virgil S. Parler, Louise S. Coody and Nillie Elene S. Bozard; and two brothers: Jack Sanders and Ray Sanders. Survivors include his loving spouse and best friend, Opal Williams Sanders; two sons, Walter Edwards Sanders Jr. and his wife, Kathy Weir Sanders, and John Mark Sanders, all of Raleigh; a sister, Rosalyn Sanders Underwood of New Berry, S.C.; two sisters-in-law, Mary Louise Sanders of Milltown, N.J., and Gertrude Sanders of Chapin, S.C.; and by many nieces and nephews."]
[Obituary of Opal Sanders: "Opal Williams Sanders, 87, of Raleigh, N.C., formerly of Elizabethtown, ended her earthly journey on Friday, Sept. 4, 2009. She was born Aug. 30, 1922, in Elizabethtown to John and Eunice Williams. In addition to her parents, Opal was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Walter Edward Sanders Sr.; her sisters, Forrest Williams Chenault Jacobs and Lois Williams Williams, all of Elizabethtown. Opal was a longtime member of Forest Hills Baptist Church. She was a member of Agape Sunday School Class. She is survived by two sons, Walter Edward Sanders Jr. and wife, Kathy Weir Sanders, and John Mark Sanders, all of Raleigh. She is also survived by a very special niece, Joyce Carol Gibson, and special nephew, John Chenault of Elizabethtown. Opal was educated at Elizabethtown High School, Western State Teachers College and WMU School of Social Studies as well as many Bible courses at Southern Seminary in Louisville. She also studied piano and organ at the University of Louisville. She played the piano for all chapel programs and choirs the four years in high school. She was sent each year to represent Elizabethtown High School to compete at the state level. Opal was an accomplished musician playing the piano and organ for worship services, weddings and funerals where her husband served as pastor. She married her pastor, Dr. Walter E. Sanders, on Aug. 28, 1944 in Elizabethtown. As pastor's wife, Opal enjoyed working with her husband in all the churches where he served as pastor. Opal was so blessed to have lived with this wonderful Baptist minister for nearly 64 years. God is so very good. A funeral service is at 2 p.m. today at Forest Hills Baptist Church in Raleigh. Interment will follow at Raleigh Memorial Park. The family will receive friends in the church parlor from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Forest Hills Baptist Church, 201 Dixie Trail, Raleigh, NC 27607. She wants to say goodbye here on Earth to her wonderful neighbors on Driftwood Drive, many friends and Forest Hills Baptist Church family. As Peter Marshall said to his wife the night he died, 'I'll see you in the morning.'"]
