Sutton - Sykes

Jean Brooks Sykes of Raleigh and Dr. Leonard Franklin Sutton Jr. of Greenville were married May 31, 2003, at five-thirty in the evening at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Beaufort. The Reverend Charles Dupree officiated at the double ring ceremony. A reception was held at Coral Bay Club in Atlantic Beach following the ceremony. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jon Kenneth Sykes of Raleigh. She is the granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank Thomas Miller Jr. of Charlotte, Mrs. Jean Sykes Smith of Rocky Mount, and the late Horace Leonard Sykes of Enfield. Parents of the groom are Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Franklin Sutton of Richmond, Virginia. He is the grandson of the late Mrs. Martha Mills Garrett of Richmond, Virginia, the late Mr. Jesse Edward Mills of Greenville, and the late Mr. and Mrs. Randolph Marcellus Sutton of Mt. Olive. Sister of the bride, Anne Macon Sykes of Raleigh, served as maid of honor. Bridesmaids were Ashley Whitaker Andrew and Sally Hubbard Wyche of Chapel Hill, Courtenay Sheldon Carruthers and Linda Lawson King of Raleigh, Elizabeth McDonald Dempsey of New York City, New York, Abbey Keenan of Washington, D.C., Charlotte Anne Hartzog and Sara Francis Price of Winston-Salem, and Elizabeth Ann Silverstein of Charlotte. Honorary bridesmaids were cousins of the bride, Sarah Davis Simons and Margaret Miller Simons of Raleigh. Junior bridesmaids were cousin of the bride, Sara Curtis Sykes of Rocky Mount, and nieces of the groom, Caroline Mills Fuqua and Sarah Randall Fuqua of Russellville, Kentucky. Leonard Franklin Sutton served as his son's best man. Groomsmen were brother-in-law of the groom, Randall Gray Fuqua of Russellville, Kentucky; Carter McKee Brenneman and Graham Van Dorston King of Raleigh; Peter Jennings King and James Herndon McElmurray III of Charleston, South Carolina; Jackson McCardell Smith of Charlotte; Christopher Matthew Simons of Greenville; Derek Thomas Slayton of Arlington, Massachusetts; and David James Little Jr. and James Elwyn Todd III of Wilmington. Dr. Mary Lynn Moss was the scripture reader and Joseph Edwin Branch was the acolyte. Soloist Sarah Davis Simons provided music. The bride graduated from Wake Forest University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Exercise Science. She is a teacher and coach at Needham Broughton High School in Raleigh. The groom received an undergraduate degree from Davidson College and Ph.D. from North Carolina State University. He is an assistant professor of Biology at East Carolina University in Greenville. After a honeymoon trip to Tortolla, British Virgin Islands, the couple will live in Greenville.
