The Shiflers
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Shifler of Hagerstown were honored with a surprise 50th wedding anniversary celebration Saturday, April 5, 1997, at Evangelical Lutheran Church in Greencastle, Pa.
The event was hosted by their daughter, Candy, and her husband, Doug, and by Doug's parents, Don and Betty Appleby of Greencastle.
Approximately 65 friends and relatives attended.
Mason Dixon Barbershop Quartet performed.
The couple was married April 26, 1947, in Boonsboro, by the Rev. Frank Stine.
Mrs. Shifler is the former L. Kathleen Holmes.
She is retired from working part time at D&P Coin Laundry.
Mr. Shifler is retired from Doubleday and Co.
The couple have two children and two granddaughters.

(Obituary of L. Kathleen Shifler: "Leah Kathleen (Holmes) Shifler, 89, of Hagerstown, Maryland, passed away on Saturday, August 6, 2016, at Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown. Born on November 8, 1926 in Keedysville, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late John William and Mary (Marsh) Holmes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Elwood Shifler, on August 22, 2002. She was a graduate of Boonsboro High School. Leah was employed with D&P Dry Cleaners in Hagerstown and also had worked as a greeter at Walmart. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Funkstown. She enjoyed spending time with her family and she will be deeply missed. She is survived by one daughter, Candy S. Appleby and husband Doug of Greencastle, Pennsylvania; one son, R. Gregory Shifler of Hagerstown; two sisters, Louise Hamilton, and Patsy Hoover and husband Dean, all of Hagerstown; and two granddaughters, Hillary Appleby Bohrer and husband Kevin, and Autumn Appleby, all of Greencastle. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Gladys Pacyna. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 10, 2016, at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, in Boonsboro. Rev. Darrell L. Layman will officiate. Interment will follow at the Boonsboro Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the Funeral Home. (Obituary of Ralph Shifler: "Ralph Elwood Shifler, 76, of 17529 Virginia Ave., Hagerstown, died Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002, at Washington County Hospital. Born April 6, 1926, in Boonsboro, he was the son of the late Ralph and Vera Nunamaker Shifler. He was employed by Fairchild Aircraft; and by Doubleday and Co., retiring after 15 years. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Benevola United Methodist Church. He was a member of Hagerstown AMVETS Post 10 and AARP. He is survived by his wife, Leah Kathleen Shifler, whom he married April 26, 1947; one daughter, Candy S. Appleby of Greencastle, Pa.; one son, Greg Shifler of Hagerstown; one sister, Elizabeth Socks of Williamsport; two granddaughters; three nieces; one nephew; one great-niece and three great-nephews. Services will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Bast Funeral Home, Boonsboro. The Rev. Darrell L. Layman will officiate. Burial will be in Boonsboro Cemetery.
