The Shanks
Mr. and Mrs. Hillard L. Shank of Clear Spring were honored at surprise 50th wedding anniversary party Saturday, Feb. 15, at the American Legion Activity Building in Clear Spring.
The event was hosted by John and Kay Beard, John and Ruth Mills and Gene and Roberta Yetter.
Approximately 90 family members and friends attended.
The Shanks were married Feb. 15, 1947, by the Rev Luther L. Hare at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Clear Spring.
Mrs. Shank is the former Zella L. Beard, daughter of the late Jesse and Jennie Beard of Mooresville.
Mr. Shank is the son of the late Paul and Meta Shank of Clear Spring.
Both are former employees of Victor Products in Hagerstown.
Mr. Shank also is a veteran of World War II.
The Shanks have several nephews and nieces.

(Obituary of Hilliard Shank: "Hillard Lawrence 'Bub' Shank, 83, of 12513 Boyd Road, Clear Spring, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2005, at Washington County Hospital. Born Aug. 6, 1922, in Big Spring, Md., he was the son of the late Paul McKinley and Meta Goldie Hull Shank. He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church of Clear Spring, Joseph C. Herbert American Legion Post 222 of Clear Spring and a lifetime member of Clear Spring Lions Club. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the 51st Bomb Group, 48th Bomb Squadron, Radio Operator/Waist Gunner on a B-25 Bomber in the Pacific Theatre. He was honorably discharged in 1945. He was a 1940 graduate of Clear Spring High School. He retired after more than 30 years of service from Victor Products/Reed Industry Corporation. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Zella Lucille Beard Shank of Clear Spring; a sister, Ruth D. Mills and her husband, John Mills, of Clear Spring; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Helen V. Malcolm; and a brother, Leroy Paul Shank. Graveside services will be Friday, Nov. 4, at 10 a.m. at St. Paul Cemetery, with military honors conducted by Joseph C. Herbert American Legion. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Clear Spring, with Pastor Elaine Swinehart officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday, Nov. 3, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Donald Edwin Thompson Funeral Home, 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring. For the convenience of friends, you may visit after noon.
