The Bartleses
Mr. and Mrs. Dean Bartles were honored for their 50th wedding anniversary with a surprise dinner party Saturday, Aug. 10, 1996, at Day's Inn in Hagerstown.
The event was hosted by the couple's daughters and their spouses, Deborah and Don Stevenson of Hagerstown, Bonnie and Lanny Price of Lubbock, Texas, and by Mrs. Bartles' niece Barbara, and her husband Vernon Schroyer of Waynesboro, Pa., and by Mrs. Bartles' sister, Helen White of Hagerstown.
Mr. Bartles is a retired supervisor from Fairchild Republic Co.
He served during World War II in the Pacific theater.
Mrs. Bartles, the former Virginia Johnson, is retired from the former First Federal Savings and Loan of Hagerstown.
The Bartleses were married Aug. 11, 1946, by the late Rev. Paul B. Watlington at First Baptist Church in Hagerstown where they remain members.
The couple have four grandchildren and five step-grandchildren.

Dean was a devoted Christian, he read his Bible everyday and strived to live according to God's ways. He was member of First Baptist Church, where he served as Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and Trustee. He was also preceded in death by two granddaughters, ten brothers & sisters. (Obituary of Virginia Bartles: "VIRGINIA GROVES BARTLES, 89, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away Wednesday, January 14, 2015, at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, MD. Born Sunday, December 13, 1925, in Hagerstown, MD, she was the daughter of the late John William Johnson and the late Mae Irene (Borne) Johnson. She graduated from Hagerstown High School in 1943, and was employed at First Federal Savings & Loan, retiring after 13 years of service. Virginia was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church, where she organized Bible school for many years, and served in many other capacities within the church. In her early years, Virginia volunteered with the PTA and American Legion Auxiliary. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Dean Lesher Bartles; daughters, Deborah D. Stevenson, of Hagerstown, Barbara E. Schroyer, of State Line, PA, and Bonnie C. Brooks, of Ft. Worth, TX; sister, Helen E. White of Hagerstown, MD; 7 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and her loving canine companion, Cinderella. She was preceded in death by a sister, Betty J. Myers; and one granddaughter, Paige E.
