The DeHaans

Frank and Dolly (Stubbs) DeHaan celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Friday, Feb. 14, 1997, at Mount Aetna Camp Lodge in Hagerstown.

The event was attended by approximately 175 relatives and friends.

Two members of the original wedding party attended.

The DeHaans have three children, Larry DeHaan of Hagerstown, Charla Lagasse of Brandon, Fla., and Gary DeHaan of Pasco, Wash. They also have four grandchildren.

They were married Feb. 18, 1947, in Takoma Park, Md.

In 1984 they moved to Hagerstown and purchased the Dutchie Pretzel Factory in Smithsburg.

Today they employ more than 100 people and sell their products in more than 25 states.

Mr. DeHaan was born in 1926 in Ridgewood, N.J.

Mrs. DeHaan also was born in 1926 in Illinois.

The couple attended Shenandoah Valley Academy in New Market, Va., and graduated together in 1944.

After high school, Mrs. DeHaan was employed at a dairy farm owned by Dr. Hadley in Gaithersburg, Md.

Mr. DeHaan graduated in 1950 from Union College in Lincoln, Neb., with a degree in agriculture and also became employed by Dr. Hadley.

After seven years, he bought the business. Over the years Hadley Farms has changed its operation and its location. It now operates a bakery in Smithsburg.

Highland View Academy, a co-educational high school in Hagerstown, was established because of the contributions of the DeHaans.
