The Swopes
Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. Swope of Hagerstown celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday, Nov. 3, 1996.
They were joined by their family at Sunday worship services at First Baptist Church in Hagerstown, followed by a dinner at Antrim House Family Restaurant in Hagerstown.
The couple were married Oct. 30, 1946, by the Rev. Paul B. Watlington at First Baptist Church.
Mrs. Swope is the former Peggy Ruth, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. Ruth.
She is retired from Angstrohm Precision.
Mr. Swope is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Swope and the late Geraldine Swope.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and is retired from Western Maryland Railway.
They have five children, Larry Swope of Melbourne, Fla.; Roxy Bussard and Dennis Swope, both of Hagerstown; Dwight Swope of Keedysville; and Kim Householder of Hedgesville, W.Va.
They also have eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

(Obituary of Robert Swope: "ROBERT C. “BOB” SWOPE, 77, of 1633 Edgewood Place, Hagerstown, Maryland, died on Thursday, April 01, 2004 at the Washington County Hospital. Born May 13, 1926 in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late John W. Swope, Jr. and Geraldine Woolridge Swope. He graduated from Hagerstown High School. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U. S. Navy. He served in the Pacific on the U.S.S. Day. He was employed with the Western Maryland Railway for thirty-eight years. He was a member of the Crossroads Community Church of Falling Waters, West Virginia, and a former long time member of the First Baptist Church of Hagerstown. He was an avid bowler. He is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Peggy Louise Ruth Swope; two daughters, Roxy A. Landis of Martinsburg, West Virginia, and Kimberly L. Householder of Hedgesville, West Virginia; three sons, Larry L. Swope of Melbourne, Florida, Dennis W. Swope of Hagerstown, and Dwight D. Swope of Keedysville, Maryland; one brother, William E. Swope of Hagerstown; step-mother, Madeline Swope of Hagerstown; one step-sister, Frances Koons of Hagerstown; one step-brother, Rev. Jay Bohn of Pennsylvania; eight grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Carol Ann Swope; and two brothers, Clyde H. Swope, and Charles E. Swope. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a. m. Monday, April 5, 2004 at Green Hill Cemetery in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. Memorial services will be held at 11:30 a. m. Monday, April 5, 2004 at the First Baptist Church of Hagerstown, Corner of Washington and High Street. Reception following the service in Harris Hall at the church. Rev.
