During the years of World War II, Dot corresponded with many of the local servicemen both in the United States and overseas, keeping them informed of the happenings at home and letting them know they were not forgotten. From there, she went to work as a cook at Shipley Elementary School, retiring as Head Cook in 1987. Dot was a member of the Engle United Methodist Church. She joined church at the age of 12 and attended services faithfully until the past two years, when her health would not always allow her to attend. She served on the church council, was Sunday School Superintendent and taught Sunday School for many years. Dot was a wonderful cook and known especially for her homemade cakes.
