The Martzes
Mr. and Mrs. John L. Martz Sr. of Hagerstown celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday, Sept. 1, 1996, at a dinner at Family Time Restaurant.
The event was hosted by their children, John L. Martz Jr. and Richard E. Martz of Hagerstown, Gary L. Martz Sr. of Greencastle, Pa., Gerald E. Martz Sr., of Maugansville and Avis "Suz" Stouffer of Arlington, Texas.
The couple has nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The Martzes were married Sept. 1, 1946 by the Rev. Gonso in Hagerstown.
Mr. Martz retired from Mack Trucks in 1991.
Mrs. Martz is a homemaker.

(Obituary of Betty Martz: "Betty Lee Martz, 85, of Hagerstown passed away Saturday, June 1, 2013, at her home. Born Feb. 29, 1928, in Boonsboro she was the daughter of the late Otis Russell and Esther Irene (Rowland) Long. In addition to being a mother and homemaker, she previously worked for Fairchild and as a supervisor for the Ramada Inn. She was a member of Boonsboro Bible Church. She was a lifetime member and past president of AMVETS Post No. 10 Auxiliary, where she also held numerous other offices, including financial officer. She was a 50-year volunteer for the veterans hospital and received the national hospital volunteer of the year award. She also was an officer and member of the Sackettes Unit 30 Heart of Maryland for 20 years; a member of the Marine Corps League Auxiliary; a member of the International Order of Cooties; a 25-year member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary No. 694, Hagerstown; and a 29-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 211, Funkstown. She is survived by three sons, John L. Martz Jr. of Hagerstown, Gerald E. Martz Sr. and wife, Barbara, of Boonsboro and Richard E. Martz Sr. of Hagerstown; one daughter, Avis 'Susie' Stouffer and husband, Norman, of Midlothian, Texas; daughter-in-law, Linda L. Martz of Greencastle, Pa.; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, John Lloyd Martz Sr.; a son, Gary Lee Martz Sr.; two brothers, Otis and Richard Long; and five sisters, Ardella Smith, Goldie Gloss, Ruth Smith, Gladys Hutzell and Edith Schaffer. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, June 6, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with Pastor Robert C. Jones officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery. Born Feb. 9, 1926, in Boonsboro, he was the son of the late Benjamin Daniel and Lucy Alice (Kline) Martz. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II. He retired as a machinist at Mack Trucks in Hagerstown in 1991, and also worked for Fairchild Aircraft and Westinghouse Electric. John was a lifetime member and finance officer of Washington County AMVETS Post 10 and state department of Maryland; past commander of the state department of AMVETS and Post 10; finance officer for the Joint Veterans of Hagerstown, he formerly served on the NEC of AMVETS, Hagerstown VFW Post 1936; He was hospital chairman and VAVS of AMVETS, Conococheague Red Men Tribe 84; Sad Sacks, Sack 101 of Frederick and Funkstown American Legion Post 211. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Betty Lee (Long) Martz; one daughter, "Susie" (Martz) and husband, Norman L. Stouffer, of Midlothian, Texas; three sons, John L.
