Russell and Viola Smoot of Sharpsburg were honored with a celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday, Aug. 11, 1996, at Williamsport Community Center.
The event was hosted by their children, Susan Bowman, Alan Smoot and his wife, Kim, Brenda Hose and her husband, Floyd, and Darlene Chaney and her husband, John.
The Smoots were married Aug. 7, 1946, in Cumberland, Md., by the Rev. Joseph Young.
Mr. Smoot served with the U.S. Army, 11th Armored Division in World War II.
He was employed by Statton Furniture Manufacturing Co. for 41 years and retired in June 1989.
Mrs. Smoot, the former Viola Shanholtz of Augusta, W.Va., has been a homemaker for 50 years.
The couple has eight grandchildren.

(Obituary of Russell Smoot: "Russell Ray "Bub" Smoot, 90, of Sharpsburg, passed away Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at Golden Living Center. Born May 12, 1922, in Slanesville, W.Va., he was the son of the late Ray and Hilda (Rowzee) Smoot. Russell worked as a cabinet maker for 41 1/2 years at Statton Furniture Co., retiring in 1989. He was a corporal in the U.S. Army during World War II with 41st Company A, Tank Division, 11th Armour Thunderbolts. He served in Europe and saw action in the Battle of the Bulge. Russell is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Viola C. (Shanholtz) Smoot; four children, Alan Smoot and wife, Debbie, of Falling Waters, W.Va., Brenda Hose and husband, Floyd, of Hedgesville, W.Va., Darlene Chaney and husband, John, of Hagerstown, and Susan Bowman and special friend, Bo Fox, of Greencastle, Pa.; a brother, Glen Smoot of Williamsport; two sisters, Ruby Hott of Monrovia and Violet Hott of Sharpsburg; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Smoot; and three sisters, Betty Wright, Helen Martin and Flo House. A funeral service will be Friday, April 5, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with Pastor Kevin Smoot officiating. Interment will follow at Rest Haven Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
