The Peterses
Mr. and Mrs. Howard Peters Jr. celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at a surprise dinner dance at Holiday Inn in Hagerstown Saturday, Jan. 13, 1996.
The affair was hosted by their daughters-in-law Karen and Debbie and their three sons, Barry, Chris and Craig.
The Peterses were married in Clearfield, Pa., Jan. 14, 1946.
Mr. Peters was associated with Sears for 40 years.
He served with the U.S. Marines in the South Pacific during World War II and attended Lock Haven State Teachers College in Pennsylvania.
Mrs. Peters graduated from Ithaca College in New York and taught school in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington County.
The couple has six grandsons and two great-grandchildren.
For their anniversary, the Peterses took an Alaska cruise and are planning to visit Rome in October.

(Obituary of Mary Peters: "Mary J. Peters, 85 - JULY 24, 1926 - APRIL 8, 2012 - Mary Jane Peters, 85, of Hagerstown, passed away Sunday April 8, 2012, at her home surrounded by her loving family. Born, July 24, 1926, in Clearfield, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Edward R. and Jeannette (Caldwell) Taylor. Mrs. Peters retired from the Washington County Board of Education, where she worked as a substitute teacher. In later years, she was activities coordinator at Garlock Nursing Home, Hagerstown. She was a member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church, Hagerstown. She and her husband enjoyed traveling and reading. She was a member of the Happy Face Travel Club. She is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Howard “Baldy” Peters Jr.; three children, Barry H. Peters and wife, Karen, of Hagerstown, Chris H. Peters of Strongsville, Ohio, and Craig H. Peters and fiancée, Kim Dodson, of Hagerstown; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother and his wife, Eldridge “Bud” Taylor and Katherine; and three sisters and their husbands, Leah Cole and Earl, Jean Campbell and Les, and Margaret Blair and Len. Graveside services will be Wednesday, April 11, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery, 600 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Mike Henning officiating. Friends will be received Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown.
