Betty Joe and Alfred Morris
Alfred E. and Betty Joe Morris, Topeka, will observe their 60th wedding anniversary on Friday.
Alfred Morris and Betty Joe Christie met at the USO in Pratt in 1943.
They were married July 2, 1944, in St. John.
Their children are David and Peggy Morris, Brentwood, Tenn., and Beth and Dennis Brown, Plano, Texas.

(Obituary of Alfred Morris: "Alfred Ernest Morris, 93, of Topeka passed away Monday, January 16, 2017. Al was born July 19, 1923 in Montreal, Canada, the son of Henry and Anne Elizabeth (Plummer) Morris. He was the sixth of eight children. He grew up in New York City. Al enlisted in the Army Air Force, first being stationed in Pratt, KS, for radio training. He was an Aircraft Radio Operator serving tours of duty in the Philippines and Japan. Following his discharge in February, 1945, Al started working on a Business degree at Pratt Junior College and finished at the University of Kansas in 1951. He worked briefly for Kansas Power & Light before joining Southwestern Bell in June 1951, where he remained until his retirement 35 years later in 1986. His early years at SWB required frequent relocation and as a result, Al and Betty Joe spent time in Topeka, La Crosse, Abilene, Lawrence and Hutchinson before settling back down in Topeka in 1957. They moved to Overland Park in 1965 only to return to Topeka in 1971. Al was a member of First Baptist Church of Topeka where he taught a Sunday school class for several years and was a Deacon along with a variety of other church roles. He enjoyed golf, fishing, cruising, snow skiing and college sports. He was a lifetime member of the Kilwinning Lodge #265 A.F. & A.M. in Pratt. Al met Betty Joe Christie while he was stationed in Pratt and they were married on July 2, 1944 in St. Johns, KS. They celebrated 72 years together before Betty Joe passed away November 14, 2016. He was also preceded in death by his seven siblings. Survivors include children, David (Peggy) Morris, Brentwood, TN; Beth Anne (Dennis) Brown, Plano, TX; grandchildren, Jennifer (Tim) Shuman, Julie Morris, Brian Brown; and great-grandchildren, Jacob and Caitlin Shuman. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at First Baptist Church, 3033 SW MacVicar in Topeka. Burial with Masonic rites and Military honors will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, January 20, 2017. (Obituary of Betty Joe Morris: "Betty Joe Morris, 92, Topeka, passed away Monday, Nov. 14, 2016. Betty Joe was born July 23, 1924 in Stafford, the daughter of Basil Christie and Bessie Christie (Helsel). She graduated from Pratt High School. In the late 1940s she worked in Lawrence as secretary to the Dean of Women at the University of Kansas. Later she worked in the business office at Washburn University in Topeka. Betty Joe was a member of First Baptist Church, taught the Faithbuilder’s Sunday School class, was church financial secretary for many years, and taught a Menninger Bible Study class for 35 years. She loved playing golf competing in local and state wide tournaments up through 2016. An avid bridge player, she played with the American Contract Bridge League and other local bridge groups. She was married to Alfred Ernest Morris on July 2, 1944 in St. John. He survives. Other survivors include children, David (Peggy) Morris, Brentwood, Tennessee, Beth Anne (Dennis) Brown, Plano, Texas; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19, at First Baptist Church, 3033 SW MacVicar in Topeka. Burial follows at Mount Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday evening, Nov. 18.
