Max 'Buck' and Vivian Diller
Max 'Buck' and Vivian Diller, Topeka, celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary at an open house May 22, 2004 at the home of their daughter, Connie Moritz, in Overland Park.
More than 90 people attended from across the country.
Max Diller and Vivian Odgers were married May 25, 1934, in Belleville.
Open house hosts were their daughters and their husbands, Connie and Don Moritz, Overland Park; Sue Ann Bryant, Westlake Village, Calif.; Debbie and Loren Drum, Canyon Lake, Texas; and Heather and Carson Elliff, Springfield, Mo.
Their daughter Judie Murphy died in December 2003.
They have seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Mr. Diller taught at Scruby and was a principal in the Morrowville, Miltonvale and Alma school districts.
During the summers, he worked for Rock Island Railroad.
They moved to Belleville in 1944, when Mr. Diller entered the Army.
He was taken prisoner at the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944 and was held for six months.
He received a Purple Heart and was discharged in 1945.
He returned to work for the Rock Island at Belleville, where he worked until he retired in 1979.
Mrs. Diller taught at Mount Pleasant before her marriage.
She worked at Washington County Bank and during World War II worked at First National Bank in Belleville.
She returned to work at Wheelers in Belleville in 1974.
The Dillers moved to Topeka in 1997.

(Obituary of Max Diller: "Max R. "Buck" Diller, 91, Topeka, passed away on Saturday, February 17, 2007. Buck was born August 24, 1915 in Washington, Kansas, the son of Victor Otto and Elva Martha (Davis) Diller. He grew up in rural Morrowville and graduated from Morrowville Rural High School in 1932. He served as a teacher and administrator in Morrowville, Miltonvale and Alma schools for 20 years. He then went to work for the Rock Island Railroad as a Conductor-Brakeman, retiring in 1980. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Germany, was captured during the Battle of the Bulge, and was a P.O.W. for 6 months in Dresden during the Dresden fire bombings. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge AF & AM, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, and the National Association of Railroad Employees. Buck married Vivian Elnora Odgers on May 25, 1934. She survives. Other survivors include daughters, Connie Lee Moritz and husband, Don, Overland Park, KS, Sue Ann Bryant, Westlake Village, CA, Debbie Drum and husband, Loren, Canyon Lake, TX, Heather Elliff and husband, Carson, Springfield, MO; 5 grandchildren; a sister, Jean Diller, Grand Junction, CO; 2 step-grandchildren and 6 step-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Judie Murphy; sister, Geraldine Zahn; and a brother, Lawrence Diller. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 20, 2007, at the Colmery-ONeil Veterans Administration Medical Center Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the chapel. Burial will be in Leavenworth National Cemetery on Wednesday, February 21, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is in charge of arrangements. (Obituary of Vivian Diller: "Vivian E. Diller, 93, Topeka, passed away Monday, April 28, 2008 at a local hospital. Vivian was born on Dec. 3, 1914, in Morrowville, the daughter of John W. and Mabel F. (Mayberry) Odgers. She grew up in Morrowville and graduated from Morrowville Rural High School before beginning her career as an elementary school teacher in Washington County. She later worked at First National Bank and Wheelers Farm Supply in Belleville. She was a member of Opal Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star in Belleville and active in Rainbow for Girls. She enjoyed sewing and was a member of the quilting group at Central Christian Church in Belleville. She was also a member of First Christian Church in Topeka. After retirement, she and her husband enjoyed being snow birds in Paradise Park in McAllen, TX, where they spent the next 20 plus winters. Vivian married Max R. "Buck" Diller on May 25, 1934. He preceded her in death on Feb. 17, 2007. Survivors include daughters Connie Lee Moritz and husband, Don of Overland Park, KS; Sue Ann Bryant, Westlake Village, CA; Debbie Drum and husband, Loren of Canyon Lake, TX and Heather Elliff and husband, Carson of Springfield, MO; one sister, Leota Morsch of Marysville, KS; one brother, J.K. Odgers and wife Fran of Topeka; 5 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren and 7 step-great grandchildren. Vivian was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Velma Waterman; and daughter Judie Murphy. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, May 2, 2008 at First Christian Church. Burial will follow in Leavenworth National Cemetery at 12:30 PM. Vivian will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. on Thursday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to service.
