Michelle Painter, Jacksonville, and Brook Smith, Orlando, were married at 6 p.m. on Sept. 1, 2002, at the Casa Marina.
The bride, daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. Richard Painter of Jacksonville, graduated from Stanton College Preparatory School and Samford University. She is employed by Lake Highland Preparatory School in Orlando as a sixth-grade science teacher.
The bridegroom, son of Dr. and Mrs. Rick Smith of Winter Haven, graduated from Winter Haven High School and is working on EMT/firefighting standards at Seminole Community College.
The wedding was a beachfront ceremony, where 200 of their closest friends gathered to witness their vows of marriage that Michelle and Brook wrote to each other.
The bride's sister, Melissa Painter Greene, was the matron of honor; Elisa Jones was the maid of honor.
The bridesmaids were Kacee Smith, sister of the groom, Mindy Painter, sister-in-law of the bride, Kelly Alling, Abi Caron, Theresa Crouse, Kristin Davis, Ashley Goetz and Kimberly Teague. They were dressed in Jim Helm, dark red strapless, tea-length gowns. They wore black flip-flops that were given to them by the bride.
The groom's father Dr. Rick Smith and Rick Braithwaite were the best men. The groomsmen were Kelley Smith, brother of the groom, Rich Painter, brother of the bride, Justin Crowder, Micah Darte, Salar Gajar-Dowlatshahi, Chad Howett and Doug Knapp. They wore black contemporary tuxedoes.
Michelle's father, Rev. Rick Painter, lead the ceremony, Brook's grandfather, Dr. Robert Smith, read scripture and Michelle's grandfather, Rev. Elmer Painter did the affirmation of marriage. Michelle's brother, recording artist Rich "Creamy" Paint sang "Ocean of You" along with Mindy, his wife. Michelle's aunt and uncle, recording artists Fleming and John sang a song written by her dad to her mom for their wedding, called "This Wedding Evening."
The reception was also at the Casa Marina. They served shrimp pasta with two sauces, grilled vegetables, stuffed mushrooms, fried flounder and seafood primavera. A four-tiered cake with red roses in the center, with chocolate mint, red velvet and almond butter cream was served as desert. The groom's cake was carrot cake made from a family recipe and looked like a wave with a surfboard on it. The groom's mother also made the punch from a family recipe.
A disc jockey kept the night going playing favorite songs of Michelle and Brook.
The bride and groom left the reception through a blazing path of sparklers held by friends and family.
Following a trip to Ocho Rios, Jamaica, the couple will live in Orlando.
