Katya Ernestine Fels and Paul Hart Smyth
Katya Ernestine Fels, daughter of Margaret Fels, Princeton, and the late Stephen Fels, to Paul Hart Smyth, son of Bernard and Geraldine Smyth, South Hadley, Mass; on December 8, 2001, at Our Lady of the Valley Church, Sheffield, Mass., Father Donald Mulrenan officiating.
The bride, a graduate of Groton School, graduated cum laude from Harvard University. She received a Harvard University Award for Distinguished Teaching in May 1994.
In 1995, working under fellowships from the Stride Rite foundation and the Echoing Green Foundation, Ms. Fels founded a non-profit organization for homeless women called "On the Rise." She now serves as its executive director. Ms. Fels has been locally and nationally recognized for her work with homeless women. She serves on the community advisory board for Massachusetts State Representative Jarrett Barrios.
Mr. Smyth graduated from Amherst College, Amherst, Mass., in 1990. He served as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Marshall Islands, following graduation, after which he graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law, where he was named a Ritter Scholar.
He is employed as an assistant district attorney in Suffolk County, Mass., where he is assigned to the Gang Unit. Mr. Smyth volunteers his services at a domestic violence shelter and at the Salvation Army Homeless Shelter in Virginia.
The couple will live in Boston.
