SUMNER - NEWELL
Gwendolyn Brooke Sumner and Wesley Scott Newell exchanged wedding vows August 23 at 6 p.m. at Shandon Baptist Church, Columbia. Rev. Barry Gray performed the double-ring ceremony. The bride is a daughter of Mrs. Donna Crocker Sumner and John Michael Sumner of Union. The groom is a son of Mrs. Ann Patterson Newell and Harry Evans Newell, Jr. of Greenwood.
Nuptial music was provided by organist Mrs. Sharon Rattray of West Columbia; trumpeter Mike Myers of Columbia and Ms. Cayse Crawford of Union, vocalist. Given in marriage by her parents, the bride chose a couture strapless, slim-line gown of duchess satin designed by Mori Lee, adorned with an array of crystal beading in a unique patttern accenting the neck and hemline band. The corset back was highlighted by a sweep train.
A matching beaded shawl was worn after the wedding. Her fingertip raw-edged veil was accented with Austrian crystals and worn with a tiara. She carried a bouquet of calla lilies, white stock variegated lily grass grown by her late great-grandmother Mrs. Louise Hines, and accented with white sheer ribbon.
Miss Merritt Leigh Sumner of Huntersville, N.C., served her sister as maid of honor. Mrs. Daniela Addis Peagler, Lexington, was matron of honor. Bridesmaids were Miss Andrea Leigh Newell of Greenwood, sister of the groom; Miss Tabitha Dawn Scarborough of Columbia; Miss Dana Glenn Love of Folly Beach; Miss Brooke Gabrielle Lariviere of Columbia, and Mrs. Michelle Leigh Owen of Charleston, all friends of the bride. Attendants wore two-piece dresses in claret matte satin with strapless tops, accented with a tiny belt embellished with a rhinestone buckle, which fell over a straight skirt with a trumpet flare hem.
They carried hand-tied bouquets with white stock variegated lily grass and white sheer bows. Sarah Kathryn Newell of Beaufort, cousin of the groom was flower girl. She wore a gown similar to that of the honor attendants.
Honoraries were: Haley Mote Bell, Brie Trotter, Tiffany Eargle and Jennifer Sarvis, all of Columbia; Harmony Whitehead and Lauren Inman of Union; Wendy Carroll of Myrtle Beach; Lauren Hilton Tjaden of Tallahassee, Fla.; Julie White Hoffman of Cayce and Lauren Christine Griffith of Irmo. Harry Evans Newell, Jr. served his son as best man. Groomsmen were Walter Edward Standish, Lewis Paul Taylor and Daniel O'Neal Nunn, all of Columbia; Brett Matthew Hamilton and Ermal Ndreau, both of Charleston and Shane Landon Bolic of Augusta, Ga., all friends of the groom. Miss Wendy Carroll of Myrtle Beach and Mrs. Julie White Hoffman of Cayce attended the register.
The bride is a 2001 graduate of USC presently working on a master's degree. She is MSP coordinator with Blue Cross/Blue Shield, working as a parttime dance instructor at Timmerman School of Performing Arts. She is a granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Heyward Crocker, Jr. of Union and the late Mr. and Mrs. John Everett Sumner of Union.
The groom is a 2000 graduate of USC and is project leader with Blue Cross/Blue Shield. He is a grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Luke Patterson of McCormick and Mrs. Lavinia Newell of McCormick. After a honeymoon trip to Cancun, Mexico, the couple will live in Columbia.

The groom's parents hosted the rehearsal party at poolside at Wildewood Country Club, Columbia. Following the ceremony, the bride's parents hosted a reception at the Columbia Country Club.
