Toles celebrate diamond 60th anniversary
On the evening of Dec. 17, 2003, an anniversary party was attended by family members to honor Doris and Ormond 'Buzz' Toles at Stockton Joe's in Stockton.
The evening was hosted by their son, Thomas and daughter, Judith in honor of their parents' 60th wedding anniversary.
It was in San Francisco, Dec. 17, 1943, that Doris Jane Goodwin of Cleveland, Ohio and Ormond 'Buzz' A. Toles of Milwaukee, Wisc., exchanged vows to begin married life that has extended to 60 years together.
For the last 15 years, Doris has been a retail clerk at Tomorrow's Heirlooms and the Ice Cream Emporium in Sutter Creek.
Buzz retired after 40 years as a service technician with National Cash Register Co. (NCR) out of Dayton, Ohio and retired to Sutter Creek.
In 1942, the couple met in El Paso, Texas after Ormond trained for his position with NCR. Doris was working in a drug store and Ormond answered a repair call for the cash register in the store. They kept company until Ormond joined the Navy and left for boot camp in San Diego.
They met again in San Francisco where they were married in the serviceman's hotel by the Navy Chaplin in 1943. They lived in San Francisco and Oakland until he was sent overseas during the war.
Doris moved to Pasadena to live with Ormond's family and the first of the couple's three children, Judith, was born there.
The couple traveled back and forth to Dayton, Ohio and son Thomas was born in Cleveland where Doris' family lived.
As a NCR employee's family, they moved to many cities and daughter Susan was born in El Paso, Texas.
Within time they moved back to California and for many years raised their family in Stockton. Loving the area, they eventually built a house and retired in Pine Grove.
He opened a business, 'Buzz's National Repair,' and began servicing cash registers in Amador and Calaveras businesses.
The couple has been blessed with nine grandchildren: James Austin, Shannon Schmidt, Celina Humphery, Danielle Daugherty, Matthew and Daniel Toles, Anna L. Toles, Sean and Michael O'Hare; and 14 great-grandchildren: Nathan, Josh and Amy Rice; Taylor, Bo and Summer Schmidt; Ryan, Brett, Zachary and Kaela Daugherty; Carlos Jr. Alvarez and Monica, Ryan and Malcolm O'Hare and there are two newborns expected in 2004.
