HORNING ANNIVERSARY
Hornings celebrate 60 years of wedded bliss
Friday, February 21, 2003
On Sunday afternoon, Feb. 2, Dick and Clemmie Horning of Pioneer, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary at a surprise party hosted by Peggy Roberts of Sutter Creek and Lyn Almagren at Lyn's beautiful home on Charleston Road in Volcano.
The party was attended by 74 friends and neighbors, including Amador County Supervisor Richard Vinson, the Hornings' next door neighbor.
In addition to an array of hors d'oeuvres, cake, wine and champagne, Hav Staggs, Jackson and Sharon Burwell of Sutter Creek, each read poems they had written in honor of the occasion.
The Hornings met on a blind date in 1940, while they were both freshmen at the University of Illinois. They were married in Champaign, Ill., on Jan. 31, 1943, in their senior year, just before Dick was commissioned a naval officer. He later served aboard naval warships during World War II and the Korean conflict.
Before his retirement, Dick was employed as an engineering sales representative for Hexcel in the Bay Area. The Hornings moved to Pioneer in 1988 and are active in community affairs. Both are avid golfers and bridge players.
Clemmie is an exceptional cook and frequently entertains in their lovely Pioneer home.
The couple's family consists of four children; Rick, David, Jim and Cathy and 10 grandchildren.
