Miss Jennifer Leigh Sponberg and Mr. John-Paul Whalen were united in marriage on Saturday, August 14, 2004, at seven o'clock in the evening at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas. The ceremony was officiated by the Reverend James H. McPhail. Mr. Keith Ross, organist, and Dr. Daniel W. Shipman, trumpeter, and Mrs. Leigh Shipman, soloist, performed music for the ceremony. Following the ceremony, the bride's parents hosted a reception at the Junior League of Houston, with music provided by The Works.
On the eve of the wedding, a rehearsal dinner was hosted at Carmelo's by the groom's parents. The day before the wedding a bridal luncheon at the Houston Country Club was hosted by Mrs. Megan Booth, Mrs. Gretchen Davis, Mrs. Julie Harvey, Mrs. Marilyn Hightower, Mrs. Brenda McClure, Mrs. Jackie Rendall, and Mrs. Sharon Webb, all of Midland.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald T. Sponberg of Houston. She is the granddaughter of Dr. and Mrs. Richard E. Collier of Dallas and Mr. J. Oliver Sponberg of Austin.
The groom is the son of Mrs. Frank Stanley of Berlin, Germany, and Mr. Robert P. Whalen of Kingwood. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Vincent P. Whalen of Kingwood, and the late Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Carpenter of Richfield, Ohio.
Given in marriage by her parents and escorted by her father, the bride wore a gown by Reem Acra of New York. The strapless gown of ivory satin featured a dropped waist and bodice decorated with pearls and gold embroidery. The elegant train, enhanced by antique embroidery and beading, swept gracefully to chapel length. To accentuate her dress, the bride selected a tiara by Paris, made of pearlized beads and Swarovski crystals. The tiara was completed by a cathedral length veil of imported illusion, delicately sprinkled with crystals. The bride carried a bouquet of gardenias, lily of the valley, stephanotis, porcelain roses and fleur d'amour.
Miss Carolyn Anne Sponberg, sister of the bride, served as Maid of Honor. Bridesmaids were Miss Ashley Hamilton of Houston, Miss Kelly Lockwood of Austin, Miss Lindsay Reese of Richmond, Miss Margaret Rendall of Midland, Miss Laura Tramuto of Houston, Miss Erin Wall of Houston and Miss Katherine Wilkinson of Midland. The House Party included Miss Margaret Davis of Midland, Miss Lindsay Mosley of Houston, Miss Kristi Parker of Dallas, Miss Lisa Parker of Dallas, Miss Nicole Sweat of Richmond, and Miss Elizabeth Webb of Midland.
Mr. Michael Epps of Houston served as Best Man. Groomsmen were Mr. Jordan Guidry of Houston, Mr. Ivan Hughes, Jr., of Dallas, Mr. Andrew Malloy of Houston, Mr. Christopher O'Brien of The Woodlands, Mr. William Rhoads of Houston, and Mr. Robert Todd of Houston. Ushers were Mr. Sean Dryden of Houston, and Mr. Steven Ha of Houston, Mr. Robert Morgan of Houston and Mr. Rickey Williams of Sugar Land.
The bride is a graduate of Stratford High School in Houston. She received her BBA degree in Finance from Texas A&M University where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. She is currently employed as a Senior Corporate Trust Administrator at J.P. Morgan Chase Bank in Houston.
The groom is a graduate of Stratford High School in Houston. He received his BBA degree in Finance from Texas A&M University, where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He will begin his first year of law school at South Texas College of Law this coming fall semester.
Following a honeymoon in The Bahamas, the couple will reside in Houston.
