Mrs. Nina Tannenbaum and Colonel Leopold Ortiz were united in marriage on Saturday, April 17, 2004, at eleven o'clock in the morning at St. Joseph Catholic Church in New Waverly. Father Joseph K. Kalladan performed the double ring ceremony. Music for the ceremony was provided by Pianist Michael Bobo, a friend of the groom, with Thoma Ortiz, son of the groom, as Cantor. Michael Sawaya, son-in-law of the groom, played the "Ave Maria" on the flute. Following the ceremony, a reception was held on The Southern Empress Ship at Seven Coves. Guests came as far as Brazil, Colombia, and Panama, plus eight U.S. States. One guest surprised the groom by flying his private plane from California for the wedding unannounced.
The bride is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Juan Rodriguez of Puerto Rico. She is a retired nurse consultant and a graduate of Fresno State University. The groom is the son of the late Mrs. Ignacia Medina of CA. He retired as a colonel from the U.S. Air Force. The groom was formerly the Base Civil Engineer at Dyess AFB in Abilene, TX, and was later assigned at the Pentagon. He is a graduate of San Jose State University.
The bride was given in marriage and escorted down the aisle by her son, Frank Tannenbaum. She wore an ivory gown embellished with pearls and bugle beads. The bride wore an adornment of red roses in her hair. Ring bearer was Dylan Byrnes, grandson of the bride.
Sarah Byrnes, daughter of the bride, served as Maid of Honor. She carried a dramatic bouquet of red roses. Raquel Varela, granddaughter of the groom, served as flower girl. The Best Man was Leo Paul Ortiz, son of the groom. Ushers were Steven Byrnes, son-in-law of the bride, Miriam Tannenbaum, daughter of the bride, and Maria Correa, a friend of the bride.
The couple just returned from a honeymoon in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
