Miss Joanna Len Slusser and Mr. William Craft Hughes were united in marriage on Saturday, March 13, 2004 at seven o'clock in the evening at Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church in Houston, Texas. The double ring ceremony was officiated by the Reverend James W. Nutter. Ceremony music was provided by organist Ann Frohbieter, trumpeter and guitarist Randy Adams, and soloist Jennifer Ringo of New York City and Paris, France, friend of the family. Scripture readings were given by Katelin Garland of Weymouth, Massachusetts and Michael Hughes, father of the groom. Prayers were read by the Reverend William H. Jackson, grandfather of the groom. The reception followed at the Petroleum Club with music provided by The Works.
On the eve of the wedding, the groom's parents hosted a dinner at Bistro Vino. Prior to the wedding, a bridal luncheon was hosted at Brennan's by the bride's aunt, Diana Johnson, and the bride's godmother, Laura Burns.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Charles Slusser of Houston, Texas. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Liles Slusser of Arlington, Texas; Mrs. Helen Studer Slusser of Austin, Texas; and the late Mr. and Mrs. Allen V. Davis of Corpus Christi, Texas. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Craft Hughes of Abilene, Texas. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Lee Hughes of Abilene, Texas and the Reverend and Mrs. William H. Jackson of Abilene, Texas.
Given in marriage by her parents and escorted by her father, the bride chose an elegant gown designed by Elizabeth Fillmore of New York. Fashioned in an empire mode, the gown featured a strapless neckline. Chantilly lace was ruched over the bodice and embellished with scattered Swarovski crystals. The delicate lace skirt flowed gracefully into a chapel length train. The cathedral length veil and pearl tiara were created by Headpieces by Toni.
Mrs. Melissa Johnson Taylor of Muskat, Oman served her cousin as Matron of Honor. Miss Sarah Rust Foley of Washington, D.C. served as Maid of Honor. The bridesmaids included Miss Allison Florence Blanton, Miss Elizabeth Stirling Craig and Miss Kathryn Aminda Friedman, all of Houston, Texas; Miss Mary Margaret Eubanks of Charlotte, North Carolina; Miss Chanel Nikole Smith of Miami, Florida; and Mrs. Jessica Johnson Miller, cousin of the bride, of Texarkana, Texas.
Miss Darneisha Johnson of Warren, Texas served as flower girl. Honor Attendants included Mrs. Lindsey Fox Bates of Dallas, Texas; Miss Meredith Elaine Gockley of Houston, Texas; and Miss Jennifer Gail Haikin of Houston, Texas.
Serving the groom as Best Man was Mr. Darin Allan Janssen of Dallas, Texas. Groomsmen included Mr. Lee Michael Hughes and Mr. Clark Jackson Hughes, brothers of the groom, of Abilene, Texas; Mr. Jarret Lee Ellzey, Jr., Mr. James Richard Kadlick, and Mr. Adam Davis Slusser, brother of the bride, all of Houston, Texas; Mr. Christopher Tobin Marks and Mr. Roy Joseph Seiders, of Austin, Texas. Serving as ushers were Mr. John David Estes of Washington, D.C., Mr. Luke Kincaid Harrison of Abilene, Texas, Mr. Gregory Hamilton Johnson, cousin of the bride, of Houston, Texas and Mr. Rene Ortega of Abilene, Texas.
The bride is a graduate of Episcopal High School in Houston. She received her Bachelor of Arts in English from Sweet Briar College in Sweet Briar, Virginia. She is currently employed with the law firm of Slusser, Wilson and Partridge and will receive her Masters in Business Administration in marketing from University of St. Thomas in Houston in December.
The groom is a graduate of Cooper High School in Abilene, Texas. He received his Bachelor of Business Administration in Information Systems from Texas Tech University. He will receive his Doctor of Jurisprudence from South Texas College of Law in May.
Following a honeymoon in Oahu, Hawaii, the couple will reside in Houston, Texas.
