Ms. Lou Ellen Thompson and Mr. John Milton Black were united in marriage on Saturday, November 23, 2002 at seven o'clock in the evening at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas, with the Reverend Terry Thompson officiating. Mr. Christopher Bryce Thompson, cousin of the bride, and Mr. Shannon Wade Bangle served as Lay Readers. The reception followed at La Colombe d'Or, with music by Brotherhood and David Caceres. The groom's parents hosted a rehearsal dinner at The Coronado Club on the eve of the wedding.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Fern Thompson of Kerrville, Texas. She is the granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Omar Yokom of Houston, Mrs. Dorothy Glanz Yokom of Louisville, Kentucky, and the late Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Beardon Thompson of Alamo, Texas. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Milton Black of Port Arthur, Texas. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Milton Black of Port Arthur, Texas, and Mr. and Mrs. William Franklin Oxford, Junior, of Beaumont, Texas.
Given in marriage by her family and escorted by her father, the bride wore a gown designed by Coco Vocci. The ivory gown featured a beaded, strapped bodice of chantilly lace. The chantilly lace was brought together in the back by hand-strung beads. The slight train and straight skirt were of silk organza. The bridesmaids wore wrapped blouses of ivory silk organza over long midnight blue velvet skirts, made by Couture by Laura, of Austin, Texas.
Miss Kathleen Marie Ryan of New York City, friend of the bride, served as Maid of Honor. The bridesmaids were Mrs. Lisa Abell Thompson of Kerrville and Mrs. Lori Elizabeth Black of Houston, sisters-in-law of the bride. Flower girls were Miss Asher Elizabeth Thompson and Miss Catherine Jane Thompson of Kerrville, nieces of the bride.
Mr. James Milton Black, father of the groom, served as Best Man. The groomsmen were Mr. William Oxford Black, of Alexandria, Virginia, and Mr. James Robert Black of Houston, the groom's brothers, and Mr. Mark Vernon Thompson of Kerrville, brother of the bride. The ushers were Mr. John Franklin Jeffers, Mr. Philip Lee Price and Mr. Michael Kenan Oldham, all of Houston; Mr. William Carl Moore, Junior, and Mr. Alex Barlow, both of Austin, Texas; Mr. Charles Andrew Woodward, of Dallas, Texas; and Mr. Walter Scott Fortney IV of Houston and Mr. Franklin Grant Fortney of San Francisco, California, cousins of the groom.
Lou is a graduate of Robert E. Lee High School in Houston, Texas. She received a Bachelor of Science from Texas Christian University, where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority. She graduated summa cum laude from South Texas College of Law, and is an attorney with the Houston office of Brent Coon and Associates.
John is a graduate of St. Stephen's Episcopal School in Austin, Texas. He received a Bachelor of Arts with honors from the University of Texas at Austin, where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta. He graduated from the University of Texas School of Law, and is an attorney with the firm of Robins, Cloud, Greenwood & Lubel, LLP in Houston.
Following a honeymoon trip to Punta Mita, Mexico, the couple will reside in Houston.
