Miss Sharyn Denise Pirtle and Mr. Shawn Karl Kaufman were united in marriage on Saturday, November 23, 2002 at seven o'clock in the evening at the Rice University Chapel in Houston, Texas. The candlelight ceremony was performed by Deacon Thomas Newhouse of Houston, Texas, and Cantor Francine Berg of Syracuse, New York.
Music for the ceremony was provided by organist Mr. Robert Brewer, Cantor Francine Berg and soloists Mr. John McVeigh of New York, New York, Mrs. Aviva Timonier Bellego of Saint Germain en Laye, France, Mrs. Camille Zamora Whayne of New York, New York, Ms. Kellen Gray of Houston, Texas, and the groom's sister, Dr. Leah Kaufman of New York, New York. Readings were given by Miss Amy Axelson of New York, New York, and Mr. Saúl Martinez of Houston, Texas. A reception followed at the Rice University Cohen House. Richard Brown's Swing Orchestra provided the entertainment. The day before the wedding, Mrs. Nancy Fisher hosted a bridal luncheon at the Junior League of Houston, and the groom's mother hosted a rehearsal dinner at Ouisie's Table.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence James Pirtle of Houston, Texas. The groom is the son of Mrs. Anna Kaufman of Brooklyn, New York, and the late Mr. Robert Ruben Kaufman.
Serving her sister as Matron of Honor was Mrs. Karen Pirtle Davis of Houston, Texas. The bridesmaids were the bride's sister, Mrs. Janet Pirtle Grauberger of Denver, Colorado, Dr. Leah Kaufman, Mrs. Samantha Barlow Martinez of Houston, Texas, and Mrs. Camille Zamora Whayne.
Mr. Andris Kasparovics of New York, New York, served as the Best Man. The groomsmen were the groom's cousin Mr. Jerry Adler, Mr. Kevin Hardy, Mr. Mark Janeczko, and Mr. Thaddeus Strassberger, all of New York, New York. Ushers were Mr. Paul Davis of Houston, Texas, and Mr. Greg Grauberger of Denver, Colorado, each a brother-in-law of the bride.
Sharyn is a stage director as well as an assistant to many directors in opera houses throughout the United States. She received both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from The Eastman School of Music.
Shawn is a lighting designer whose work spans theater, television, and fashion. He received his Bachelor's degree in Theater and Lighting Design from Purchase College, State University of New York.
Following the honeymoon in the Turks and Caicos Islands, the couple will reside in Westchester County, New York.
