Miss Melissa Garza and Mr. Michael Paul Allen were united in marriage on Saturday, February 17, 2001, at half after seven o'clock in the evening at St. Paul's United Methodist Church. The candlelight double ring ceremony was officiated by Reverend James W. Foster, Area Provost of the Texas Annual Conference. A reception followed at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. On the eve of the wedding, the groom's family hosted a rehearsal dinner at Pappadeaux.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Victor R. Garza of Houston. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Garza, Sr. and Mr. and Mrs. Mike P. Gonzales of Victoria. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gary W. Allen of Houston. He is the grandson of Mrs. Guadalupe C. Trevino and the late Mr. Ross Trevino, Sr. of Houston and Mrs. Lula Allen and the late Mr. Norris E. Allen of Paris, Texas.
Escorted by her father, the bride wore a sleeveless scoopneck gown of pearl silk chiffon and crepe by Anne Barge. The gown featured a hand-embroidered and beaded bodice with empire waist and an a-line skirt embellished with pearls and hand-embroidery in a floral pattern. The bride wore a custom designed tiara encrusted with Swarovski crystals, her mother's cathedral length veil and a strand of cultured pearls, a wedding gift from her father. She carried a heart-shaped bouquet of scarlet classic roses created for her by her aunt.
Attendants wore full-length sleeveless gowns with matching stoles of cranberry silk doupioni designed by the bride and carried silver heart-shaped pomanders. Mrs. Sandra Roberson of Katy was matron of honor and Miss Leticia Garza of Houston served her sister as maid of honor. The bridesmaids were Mrs. Jennifer Allen, Miss Deanna Cox, Miss Heather Martin and Miss Jennifer Stratton, all of Houston; Mrs. Kandice Bridges of Dallas; Miss Candy Reeves of Colorado; Mrs. Kimberly Schultz of New Hampshire; and Miss Karina Swanson of Fort Worth. Miss Sarah Flores, cousin of the groom, was flower girl. The house party included Mrs. Diane Flemming, aunt of the bride, and Miss Denise Garza, cousin of the bride, both of Austin.
Mr. Tarleton Smith of Dallas was best man. The groomsmen were Mr. Andre Caseras, Mr. Rudy Flores, Mr. Ross C. Trevino and Mr. Fidel Villareal, cousins of the groom, all of Houston; Mr. Michael Barstow of Cypress; Mr. Stephen Bridges of Dallas; Mr. Scott Nava of Fort Worth, cousin of the bride; and Mr. Alex Volk of California. Audy Perales of Corpus Christi, cousin of the bride, escorted the bride's mother. Christopher Flores of Houston, cousin of the groom, and Luke Garza of Yemen, cousin of the bride, carried heart-shaped ring pillows embroidered with the two family names made by the bride and her mother.
Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Flores, Sr. of Houston, aunt and uncle of the groom, presented the tradition of las arras. Mr. and Mrs. Michael Gonzales of Goliad, aunt and uncle of the bride, presented the tradition of el lazo.
The bride is a graduate of Robert E. Lee High School. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Advertising from Southern Methodist University. She is a member of Alpha Delta Pi. Melissa is currently a graphic designer with the United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast and her handmade art cards are represented by Constance Kay, Inc. in New York.
The groom is a graduate of Klein Forest High School. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from Texas Tech University where he was captain of the soccer team. Michael is currently Prepress Supervisor with Primasys.
Following a honeymoon cruise to the Caribbean, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Garza-Allen made their home in Houston.
