Huckins
50th Anniversary
Arline and Ross Huckins, depicted “then’ and “now,’are celebrating 50 years of marriage. The goal: 50 “mini-parties’ with family and friends in 15 states.
Arline Hock was born in New Hampshire and Ross Huckins was born in Michigan where each became “Patriarchs’ last month, as they had each receive B.S. degrees 50 years ago on June 8, 1946, which was also their wedding day. They were married at First Methodist Church in Lansing, Mich.
Each taught for 10 years in Salem at the Oregon State School for the Blind. They received M.Ed. degrees from the University of Oregon. They then taught for 26 years at the California State School for the Blind.
They retired in Tucson, Ariz. where St. Mark’s United Methodist Church became their primary source of spiritual growth, friendships and joy. Having relatives and friends in many states, they traveled the United States almost every year.
On their 25th wedding anniversary, a sister presented them with a tandem bicycle that they take on most of their auto trips and to Europe on one occasion. They have traveled all 50 states and Mexico, Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, the Caribbean, Tahiti and Fiji.
Nelson
50th Anniversary
Virginia and Lawrence D. Nelson celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends in the Garden Room at the Hotel Park Tucson with a “South of the Border’ theme party hosted by their children and sons-in-law. Tucson has been their home for the past 29 years.
They were married July 13, 1946 in the Neighborhood Congregational Church in Phoenix, Ariz.
Mrs. Nelson was born in Phoenix and is a graduate of Phoenix Union High School and Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. She taught elementary students at Roosevelt School in Phoenix, in a one room school with all 8 grades in Quartzsite, Ariz, at Adair Village, Ore., military dependents’ children in Naha, Okinawa, and English at the University of Pyukus, Naha, Okinawa. During World War II, she worked at the German/Italian Prison Camp at Papago Park near Scottsdale, Ariz. After the war, she worked for the Veteran’s Administration in Phoenix.
Mr. Nelson was born in Oklahoma and came to Arizona in 1931 from Roswell, N.M. A graduate of Scottsdale public school, he received his B.S. degree from Oregon State University and his M.Ed. degree from The University of Arizona. While in Oregon, he was mayor of Adair Village. He joined the U.S. Navy on May 26, 1942 and served as a naval aviator during World War II and the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. He flew both fixed and rotary wing aircraft. He retired from the Navy on June 30, 1970 after serving his last tour of duty as Commanding Officer of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps Receive Training, Tucson and Phoenix. After retiring from the Navy, Mr. Nelson enjoyed working as an extra in Western movies and modeling. He also taught in Arizona high schools and community colleges. He retired from teaching in 1983. Since that time, the Nelsons have traveled and become active in several organizations. At the present time, Mr. Nelson is Governor of the Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of Arizona.
Their children are John Nelson of Seattle, Wash., Patricia (Tom) McWilliams of Kirksville, Mo., and Susan (George) Matthews of Douglas, Ariz. They have 8 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Banks
60th Anniversary
Reba L. and Warren O. Banks celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with many family members and friends at a party held in their honor at their daughter’s home on July 13, 1996.
They were married July 11, 1936 Tiffion, Ohio. They moved to Tucson in 1953.
Mr. Banks worked at Hughes Aircraft Co. as a tool grinder and machinist for 20 years. He retired in 1973. He also worked as a Highway Patrol Reserve from 1953 to 1966.
Mrs. Banks worked for Dependable Life Insurance Company, Montgomery Wards and Mitchell Furniture Store. They are the parents of the late Ronald Lee Banks, Karen Fay Bruner and Diane Sue Wellman. They have 16 grandchildren and 30 great-grand children living in different parts of the United States.
Their daughters Karen Faye Bruner and Diane Sue Wellman say, “We all love you just for who you are.’
Putney
60th Anniversary
“Millie’ and Donald L. “Don’ Putney celebrated their diamond anniversary with family and friends during an open house at their east side home on June 13, 1996. High school sweethearts in Albuquerque, N.M., they eloped to Santa Fe and were married there on June 12, 1936.
In February of 1947, the Putneys became residents of Tucson and raised their 3 sons here: Chuck (Katie) Putney of Tucson, the late Donnie Putney and Gary (Jan) Putney of Phoenix. The Putneys have 5 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Putney’s lifetime occupational love was law enforcement, both in Tucson and Albuquerque.He retired from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department in June, 1979 having risen to the rank of lieutenant in charge of the Communications Department. He is a former Chief of Security at Tucson International Airport and a post president of Pima Lodge #20-Fraternal Order of Police. (Mrs. Putney is a past president of this F.O.P. Lodge auxiliary.)
Longtime Tucsonans will remember Mrs. Putney’s winning smile and energetic labor as a member of St. Joseph’s Hospital Auxiliary, of which she is past president.
Longtime working members of Emmanuel Baptist Church, they have also lent their energies to Aaron Lodge #49, Scottish Rite-York Rite, from which Mr. Putney recently received his 50 year hat and certificate; Sabbar Shrine; and Mariposa Chapter #31, Order of the Eastern Star (past “Worthy Patron’ and “Worthy Matron’). Mrs. Putney’s “baked goods’ prowess is legendary among her family and friends and Mr. Putney’s helpfulness and sense of humor have been treasured through the years.
Poulos
50th Anniversary
Hilda and John Poulos celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. All of the family gathered at Capriccio’s Restaurant for dinner to commemorate the event.
They were married July 13, 1946 in New York, N.Y. Thirty-year Tucson residents, Mrs. Poulos retired from Dillard’s and Mr. Poulos retired from The University of Arizona.
Their children are Diane (Art) Abbott of Tucson and Denise (Gary) Torkelson of Tempe. Their grandchildren are Stacy Abbott and Erin Torkelson.
Stough
50th Anniversary
Charlotte “Lorraine’ and Eugene Edwin Stough will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends at a dinner and dance at the Embassy Suites in late July.
They were married July 39, 1946 at the Chapel of the Roses in Pasadena, Calif. They are 25-year Tucson residents. Mrs. Stough retired from Alhambra Medical Clinic and Mr. Stough retired from Pasadena Area Community College.
Their children are Charles (Debbie) Stough of Tucson, Lorna (Paul) Condon of Tucson, Phillip (Lisa) Stough of Tempe, Ariz., and Patricia (Kevin) McMichael of Tucson. They have 12 grandchildren.
McFall
50th Anniversary
Elaine M. and George K. McFall celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 30, 1996 by reaffirming their wedding vows during mass at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Loves Park, Ill. Family and friends attended a reception at the St. Bridget school hall that was hosted by their children.
Mr. McFall and the former Elaine M. Bride were married June 25, 1946 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Platteville, Wis. Mrs. McFall taught in Rockford, Loves Park and parochial schools for 16 years. Mr. McFall was employed by Barber-Coleman Co. in Rockford, Ill. for 33 years.
Their 6 children are Linda L. Hall of Loves Park, Mary J. Hall of Tucson, George K. McFall, a missionary in Taiwan, Donald W. McFall of Springfield, Ill., Dennis M. McFall of Loves Park, and Ellen J. McFall of Tucson. They have 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Fulgham
50th Anniversary
Louise and Erskin Fulgham celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary sharing memoirs with family and friends during a reception on June 1, 1996 at Pima Street Baptist Church.
They were married June 1, 1946 in Maben, Miss. Residents of Tucson for 39 years, Mrs. Fulgham retired from The University of Arizona Athletic Department and Mr. Fulgham retired from Asarco Mining, Inc.
Their children are Glenda (Y.C) Kim of Tucson, Mike Fulgham of Tucson, Jeanette (Harvey) Barger of Duke, Okla. and Beth (Art) Drattlo of Tucson. They have 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Mazeika
50th Anniversary
Marie and Albert Mazeika celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception at the Burbank Manor in Burbank, Ill. Family and friends attended, including the 7 members of the wedding party.
They were married July 27, 1946 in Chicago, Ill. Twenty-two year Tucson residents, Mrs. Mazeika is a homemaker and Mr. Mazeika retired as vice president of Engineering for Milton Industries in Chicago.
Their children are Christopher (Lana) Mazeika of Mt. Zion, Ill., Albert (Cathy) Mazeika of Tucson, and Steven J. (Gloria) Mazeika of Tucson. Their grandchildren are Nikolia, Tariel and Samantha.
LaBrie
50th Anniversary
Emma and Roland J. LaBrie celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at Park West Estates in Tucson with family and friends.
They were married June 1, 1946 in Providence, R.I. Thirteen-year Tucson residents, Mrs. LaBrie retired from Almacs and Mr. LaBrie retired from Narragansett Electric Company, both of Rhode Island.
Their children are Roland Jr. of Berlin, Mass., Elizabeth Ann of Cranston, R.I., and William of Providence. They have 4 grandchildren and 2 great- grandchildren.
Foges
60th Anniversary
Bernadine C. and Steve Foges celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. They were married Aug. 10, 1936 in Crown Point, Ind. and have lived in Arizona since Nov. 2, 1972.
The Fogeses had 1 son who is now deceased. They have 3 granddaughters, 5 great-granddaughters and 2 great-grandsons.
Mr. Foges retired from U.S. Steel Company in Chicago as a locomotive engineer after 39 years of service.
Deaton
60th Anniversary
Agnes and Joseph M. Deaton celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary at their home with family.
They were married June 30, 1936 in Maplewood, Mo. Fifty-year Tucson residents, Mr. Deaton retired from Operating Engineers Local #428.
Their daughters are Geraldine Brogan of Everett, Wash., Katherine DeLong of Tucson, and Linda Porter of Tucson. They have 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Smack
50th Anniversary
Virginia and Curtis Smack celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends at an open house hosted by their daughter Elaine Bates of Tucson.
They were married July 27, 1946 in Darby, Pa. at the Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Smack is a homemaker and Mr. Smack is a retired data processing consultant, bring involved in data processing since 1943.
Their children are David (Mary) Smack of Bromall, Pa., production manager for a large publishing company; June Smack of Yreka, Calif., an insurance agent; and Elaine Bates of Tucson, a probation officer. Their grandchildren are Sandra and Amber Bates.
Cole
50th Anniversary
Anna Rose and Charles Cole celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at a party with family and close friends at the home of Nancy and Steve Drew.
They were married July 6, 1946 in Sharon, Pa. The 42 year Tucson residents are now retired.
Their children are Sandi (Barry) Jewell, Nancy (Steve) Drew, and Dan (Kathy) Cole, all of Tucson. They have 7 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
McWilliams
50th Anniversary
Sadie and T.P. Williams celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at a luncheon reception at the Elks Club on River Road on July 14, 1996.
They were married July 14, 1946 in Guthrie Center, Iowa. Thirty-five year Tucson residents, Mrs. McWilliams is a homemaker and Mr. McWilliams is a retired general practitioner who practiced in Tucson for 25 years.
Their children are Steven C. (Lynne) of Albuquerque, N.M., Thomas E. (Patricia) of Kirksville, Mo., Susan (Dennis) Luscomb of Mission, Texas, and Sara Jane (Lee) Crosslin of Wenatchee, Wash. They have 4 grandchildren.
Isaac
50th Anniversary
Rosell and Robert Isaac celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family at the Gaslight Theater in Tucson.
They were married July 8, 1946 in Kansas. They lived in Oklahoma. Mrs. Isaac retired from Southwestern Bell. Mr. Isaac retired from Texas Pacific Oil Co.
Their son is Mark Isaac (Susan) of Tucson. They have 2 grandchildren.
Mull
10th Anniversary
Terry and Charles “Chuck’ Mull celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary with a trip to Laughlin, Nev. over the Memorial Day weekend. Mrs. Mull received an anniversary band in commemoration of the anniversary.
They were married May 31, 1986 at Park Avenue Christian Church. Mrs. Mull’s brother, Rev. Alfred E. Taylor of Bridgeville, Del., officiated.
Mrs. Mull is employed by Tucson Newspapers. Mr. Mull is a minister with Park Avenue Christian Church. Their children are Farrah Houchins, Jeanette Reilly, Lori Andrews and Julian Ostrander. They have 7 grandchildren.
