Jones
50th Anniversary
David and Lillian Jones will celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary at a coffee for friends and family on Sunday, Sept. 3 at St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church where they have been members for more than 45 years.
The couple, both from the Chicago area, met when Mr. Jones was stationed at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. They were married Sept. 1, 1945 in Pueblo, Colo. Mr. Jones retired in 1987 after worming more than 40 years for Pioneer Paint and Varnish Co. Mr. and Mrs. Jones are active volunteers for the St. Luke’s Home for Women and the Shalom House Shelter.
In December, the couple will enjoy an anniversary sailing trip to the Virgin Islands where they will be joined by their “crew’ of three children, Melody (David) Fanning of Honolulu, Hawaii, Kris (Ann) Jones of Aztec, N.M., and Lori (Jesse) Woods of Tucson; and their five grandchildren, Paul, Allen, Dana, Dylan and Jesse.
McKenzie
50th Anniversary
Mae and Donald McKenzie celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary with their children and grandchildren in their home. They were married June 30, 1945 in Newport, Mich. Mr. McKenzie is employed by Western Lumber.
Their five children are Pam Sylvester of Bedminster, N.J.; Sean McKenzie, Kelly McKenzie and Megan McKenzie all of Tucson; and the late Gregory McKenzie. They have 10 grandchildren.
Jewell
50th Anniversary
Mary and Steven P. Jewell will celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary with family and friends at the Elks Lodge #385 and with a reception at their home.
The couple was married Aug. 29, 1945 in Buffalo, N.Y. They moved to Tucson in 1961 from Buffalo and bought a manufacturing business which led to the development of Jewell Enterprises.
The Jewells also bred and raced thoroughbred horses in Arizona. They retired Jan. 1, 1988 and have traveled all over the world.
Their three children are Diana Klensin, Robert Jewell and Barry Jewell all of Tucson. They have four grandchildren.
Baker
60th Anniversary
Gladys and Fred Baker celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary with a party at Devon Gables Nursing Home.
They were married Aug. 22, 195 in Sharps Chapel, Tennessee. Forty-six year Arizona residents, she is a retired homemaker and he retired from Greyhound Bus Lines.
Their children are Howard (Cheryll) Baker, Sandi (Sam) LoMaglio, and Millie (Irving) Carlisle. They have four grandchildren.
Cannon
50th Anniversary
Mary and Willard Cannon celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary with family and friends at a dinner-dance at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville, Tenn.
The couple was married Aug. 11, 1945 in Tuscaloosa, Ala. and have lived in Arizona for 28 years. Mrs. Cannon retired from the Tucson-Pima Public Library and Mr. Cannon retired from the U.S. Public Health Service.
Their children, who hosted the dinner-dance are David (Toby) Cannon of Nashville and Stephen (Barbara) Cannon and Mark Cannon of Tucson. They have five grandchildren.
Baxter
50th Anniversary
Pearl and William Baxter celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary at a barbecue given in their honor at the home of their daughter Jackie on Sunday, Aug. 6.
Their children presented a certificate confirming their parent’s reservation for a two-island tour of Hawaii. Grandchildren Todd, Courtney, Sydney, Matthew, Alex and Sam and Mrs. Baxter’s sister and brother-in-law Vernetta and Wilfred Wolff of Tucson were also in attendance. A second celebration will be held in October at their son Brian’s home where friends will be invited to attend.
The Baxters were married Aug. 9, 1945 in Vallejo, Calif. Arizona residents for 36 years, they retired as owner of Action Communications.
Their children are Sue (Richard) Dillon of Benson, Alice (Charles) McNamara, Kaye Shelton, Jackie (Donald) Armijo, Brian (Susan) Baxter, Kim (Terry Sarabia) Baxter all of Tucson. They have six grandchildren and two due in February. Their children said, “We love you, Hub and Fam.’
Longo
50th Anniversary
Marge and Gennaro “Gene’ Longe celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary by renewing their vows and celebrating with family and friends at the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base Officers Club.
They were married Aug. 19, 1945 in New York state. Mrs. Longo retired from Gates Learjet and Mr. Longo retired from Tucson Unified School District. Both are now TUSD crossing guards.
Their children are Jennie (Harry) Wilson of Placentia, Calif., Vincent (Josie) Longo of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Gene (Tina) Longo of Tucson. They have six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Skay
50th Anniversary
Marrlys and Daniel Skay’s fiftieth wedding anniversary was recognized, honored and celebrated with a memorable gathering at the couple’s home.
They were married Aug. 2, 1945 in Minneapolis, Minn. Mrs. Skay retired from Tucson Unified School District #1 and Mr. Skay is a retired business owner.
Their children are Gary Skay, Darlene Skay and Marge Leger all of Tucson. They have six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Their children said, “Mom and Dad–we love you.’
Buss
50th Anniversary
Mary and Bill Buss celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary with a renewal of their wedding vows at Mount Olive Lutheran Church. A reception with family and friends followed.
They were married Aug. 22, 1945 in Maquoketa, Iowa. Mrs. Bus is a retired registered nurse and Mr. Buss retired from Hughes Aircraft, Co.
Their two sons, who hosted the reception, are Robert R. Buss of Mesa and Rev. Gary L. Buss of Grand Junction, Colo. Their three grandchildren are Sean, Mari and Timmy.
Wittner
64th Anniversary
Gladys and O.I. “Brick’ Whittwer will celebrate their sixty-fourth wedding anniversary with a reception for family and friends at the couple’s Tucson home.
They were married Aug. 30, 1931 in Beaver City, Neb. Mrs. Wittwer is a retired teacher and retired manager of the Kino Hospital Gift Shop. Mr. Wittwer is a retired public school administrator and a retired financial securities director.
They have one daughter, Jane W. (Jerry B.) Murphy of Tucson, and one grandson, Phillip Murphy.
